Halloween is many people’s favorite time of year. Trick-or-treating for delicious candy, looking at all the spooky decorations, going to haunted houses and watching festive Halloween movies… there’s a lot to love! However, for those with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia, this can be a scary time of year.

According to Danielle Buck, Director of Community Relations at YourLife™ of Stuart, a Memory Care community in Stuart, Florida, Halloween can be a dangerous time for those with dementia. “Those with dementia have a hard time differentiating what is their reality and what is not at times,” she states. “This can make them prone to wandering, can cause them to become frightened easily and feel threatened or as if they are in danger. It’s important to know how to keep your loved one with dementia safe during Halloween to make sure it’s a good holiday for everyone.”

How to Have a Happy Halloween with No Tricks & All the Treats

To make this Halloween a little sweeter, try some of these tips from Alzheimer’s Universe.

  • Consider limiting decorations. Alzheimer’s disease can make seniors agitated or confused, according to the article. Try to stay away from skeleton and witch decorations. You should also avoid anything that can be considered gory.
  • Be careful with lighting. Flashing lights that talk and scream can also frighten those with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. This may also make them more prone to wander – be sure to either limit these decorations or watch your loved one carefully to be sure they tolerate it well.
  • Create a safe place for your loved one. Those in the early stages of dementia will likely still want to participate in the Halloween fun, but are likely to need somewhere they can retreat to when they become confused or unsettled by the festivities. If they are in the later stages of dementia, it may be best to avoid it altogether.
  • Try to be cautious with trick-or-treaters. If you and your loved one are handing out candy, be careful to not let anyone in your home that you don’t know. If your loved one isn’t up to handing out candy, consider leaving candy out with a sign on the porch that says to take a piece. Do not turn off all the lights, but instead keep them on, as vandalism and break-ins are more likely to occur if they believe no one is home.
  • Find a different way to involve your loved one in Halloween. Consider having a party for two where you enjoy candy, pumpkin carving or even watch The Great Pumpkin. Just because Halloween may look different this year, it doesn’t mean it can’t be fun!
