Summertime is here and that means warm summer days, fun in the sun, and slow, breezy summer nights. If your loved one has dementia or another form of Alzheimer’s disease, it can be harder to enjoy the summer season. While this can be for any number of reasons, most often it’s harder to enjoy because of safety issues. “When your loved one is affected by Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia, it’s even more important to ensure their safety in summer,” says Dawn Joaquin, Community Relations Director at YourLife™ of Coconut Creek, a Memory Care community in Coconut Creek, Florida. “Not only do we have to think about the everyday issues dementia can bring, from acting out, wandering, agitation and behavioral changes, but we also need to think about the safety and impact of summer’s higher temperatures, safety around water, how comfortable they will be during summer picnics and so much more. It can be overwhelming, but that’s why we’re here to help. Knowing what safety issues can affect your loved one can help you to keep them protected while providing yourself with the peace of mind of having a plan set in case a safety issue would arise.” Enhancing Your Loved One’s Protection During the Dog Days of Summer Because there are so many safety hazards associated with summer, we’ve compiled a list that can help you plan and prepare ahead of time for any situation. Try some of these tips from Unforgettable to help protect your loved one this summer.
- Stay as cool as possible. According to Unforgettable, the hottest time of day is often found to be anywhere from 11 a.m. through 3 p.m. Refrain from going outdoors around this time and instead, opt to stay inside. This can not only prevent heat stress and heat stroke, but it can also prevent sunburns and keep your loved one from becoming agitated and aggressive as a result of being miserably hot! If you must go outside, try to stay where it’s shady and cool and dress in light, loose-fitting clothes.
- Drink plenty of fluids and eat cool foods. Staying hydrated can keep body temperature down and prevent dehydration. Drink plenty of water - infuse it with fruit if your loved one prefers flavor - avoid soda, caffeine and alcohol. If your loved one has no interest in drinking fluids, serve up some popsicles, fruit or smoothies instead. This can add some festive fun and encourage them to keep cool!
- Carry some helpful equipment when you go out. Unforgettable also shares that you can help protect your loved one from heat stress by purchasing electric fans that fit in your handbags, water bottles that alert you when it’s time to drink water and an extra set of clothes to fit the weather.
- Invest in a tracking device. If you know you’ll be attending a lot of picnics and family gatherings, it’s possible your loved one could become uncomfortable and decide to wander. Tracking devices can help to alert you if they wander off, allowing you to find them quickly, further protecting them and ensuring their well-being.
